The Las Vegas Raiders should not panic about Brock Bowers missing Sunday’s season opener against the Miami Dolphins. They should, however, feel concerned that their 23-year-old offensive centerpiece is beginning another season with a knee problem.
Bowers underwent a meniscus trim Tuesday after suffering an injury during training camp. The reported recovery timeline expects him to miss only one or two games, although Raiders coach Klint Kubiak has not established a definitive return date.
The short-term prognosis offers little reason to panic, but Bowers’ recent injury history raises legitimate concerns about his long-term durability.

The former Georgia standout suffered a PCL injury and bone bruise in his left knee during Las Vegas’ 2025 opener. He played through the injury for three more games, missed the next three, and later landed on injured reserve for the final two weeks. Bowers still produced 64 receptions, 680 yards, and seven touchdowns in 12 appearances. However, those numbers declined considerably from his record-setting 112-catch, 1,194-yard rookie season.
Reports have not confirmed that his latest procedure involved the same knee. Still, another knee issue is concerning for a player whose greatest strengths include acceleration, change of direction, and gaining yards after contact.
His 12-catch, 127-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Jacksonville Jaguars last season showed how quickly Bowers can transform the offense when healthy. It also reinforced how much the Raiders lose whenever he is unavailable.
Michael Mayer’s contract provides expensive insurance
That uncertainty gained another layer Saturday when the Raiders gave Michael Mayer a three-year, $45 million extension containing $30 million guaranteed. Its $15 million annual value places the pass-catcher among the NFL’s five highest-paid tight ends, despite him recording only 35 receptions, 328 yards, and one touchdown last season.
The timing makes the contract difficult to separate completely from Bowers’ injury. However, calling it a panic move would ignore Kubiak’s offensive system. Bowers operates as a movable matchup problem, while Mayer provides a more traditional in-line option. The Raiders plan to feature both players and frequently use two-tight-end formations.
Mayer has also proven that he can handle a larger receiving role. Across four games without Bowers last season, he caught 18 of 24 targets for 196 yards and one touchdown. That makes him a credible short-term starter, not a replacement for a player capable of approaching 1,200 receiving yards.
The financial issue could become complicated after this season, when Bowers becomes eligible for an extension. A healthy campaign would likely position him to reset the tight end market, making Mayer’s $15 million annual salary an expensive complementary investment.
The Mayer deal protects the Raiders now, but it cannot reproduce what Bowers provides. There is no reason to panic about the current timetable. There is reason to worry about the developing injury pattern, and that anxiety will remain until Bowers returns and proves he can stay healthy.
