I’ve been saying since victory in the UCLA series and with a weak conference slate ahead in the remaining five weeks, the Huskers need to do things like “stay focused” and “take care of business”. I can do trite sayings with the best of them.

Well in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader, Nebraska looked extremely focused while taking care of business in brutally efficient fashion.
The Huskers didn’t rip the cover off the ball – well mostly, Jordy Frahm’s 2nd inning line-drive home run may have left a few laces fluttering out the sky – as they totaled only 5 hits.
However, Rutgers, appearing frazzled at times, made donation after donation to the Huskers’ 8-run cause. Along with the 5 hits, the ‘Skers drew 5 walks, were plunked twice, and were also the beneficiaries of 3 Rutgers errors.
When you’re given 10 free passes, those and the hits are more than plenty. Along with Jordy’s 2-run blast, Sammie Bland got back on track with a pair of RBI’s as well. She got the first one by doing the classic “take one for the team” when she was drilled with the bags packed. She then belted one into the left field corner that Mia Mitchell struggled to track down and never hesitated rounding second before she sent a cloud of dust into Rhonda Revelle’s face as she beat the throw head-first into third.
And when Jordy wasn’t sending Dudley’s into the trees, she was in the circle methodically seating Scarlet Knights batters. She tossed a 5-inning shutout while allowing only 4 hits and striking out 9. Zero walks, by the way.
So when the office finally closed for an early lunch, the Huskers could consider all tasks accomplished.
Game 2 begins shortly – it will also air on B1G+ and be broadcast on the Huskers Radio Network
