WARMINGTON: Montreal officers in crosshairs amid nationwide war on cops

· Toronto Sun

It’s a war on cops. A deadly one. Constant and nationwide with three officers murdered in the first three weeks of June.

Plus there were four more who easily could have been killed – three are in hospital and one could still die.

Who knows what is coming next? What has happened so far is disturbing.

These are dark times. Canada is the Wild West. It doesn’t matter what part of the country you are talking about, the dangers for police are real.

This was already evident when Ontario lost OPP Const. Tarun Bali , who was alleged run down by a fleeing suspect near Hearst, Ont., and Toronto Police Const. Marc Pinizzotto , who was shot to death while executing a search warrant.

Bloodshed in Montreal ‘heartbreaking’

Canada woke up Monday to hear that two RCMP officers were shot and were fighting for their lives in serious condition in Saskatchewan and that a Peel Regional Police officer dodged at least three shots on Sunday allegedly fired by a man who was on a gun prohibition.

Then came the deadly news out of Montreal. One cop was shot to death in a wild shootout with a male gunman in which his partner was also shot. She is fighting for her life in a hospital.

A civilian was also killed in this incident.

“We are deeply saddened,” said Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw on X. “On behalf of the Toronto Police Service, I extend heartfelt condolences to their families and to our policing colleagues. We also have those injured, including another police officer, in our thoughts today.”

Halton Regional Police Chief Steve Tanner called it “another heartbreaking loss” for the law enforcement community.

“I extend our deepest, heartfelt condolences to (Montreal Police) for the loss of a police officer who was killed in the line of duty,” he said. “Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this tragic incident.”

Troubling videos circulating online

When an officer dies, we all feel the impact and we’re reminded of the risks and sacrifice police officers face each day.

No one should jump to conclusions about the incident until it’s fully unpacked. Video shows an officer already under fire from the alleged suspect appearing to accidently shoot a civilian who appears from behind a planter where she is seeking cover with another injured cop.

Seconds after the engagement, she is confronted by the gunman, who appears to shoot her.

If the video is accurate, this innocent man’s death is not on the officer, who had no time or context to prevent this from happening. This will be on the gunman in military fatigues who allegedly created this crisis. He was shot and killed by police, so there will be no trial.

Anyway, you cut it, this was awful. Montreal Police are probing the incident and were expected to provide a fuller picture on Monday night of what went down there.

Suspect reportedly linked to incel ideology

But they are investigating the movements of a male suspect, who allegedly came from a western province to Quebec and according to reports had distributed a violent incel manifesto targeting women. They are said to have been in touch with his family in Calgary.

Police are also reading through a manifesto dated June 22 that expresses concerns relating to relationships with women — similar to what was revealed in previous murder sprees including the Toronto van attack.

Whatever the reason ends up being, one thing is clear: It is not safe for the public or police in 2026.

“This has been a devastating couple of weeks,” said Peel Regional Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews, who said every police officer feels for the families of these cops who die in the line of duty.

Tanner agreed, adding “when one falls, we all feel the impact and we’re reminded of the risks and sacrifice police officers face each day.”

It’s dangerous to be a police officer in Canada. And the numbers of officers shot or shot at this month back that up.

There’s already been one police funeral in June. There will be another Wednesday and at least one in Montreal very soon.
